[Indulgences and facsimiles of indulgences from the library of Henry Charles Lea]. [1692-1896?]

Collection of 5 printed broadsides, 37 facsimiles of those broadsides, and 8 facsimiles of 3 indulgences (1 issued by the Council of Basel, 1 by Pope Sixtus IV, and 1 by Pope Leo X) held at the Cornell University library. All were originally housed in a portfolio containing a larger collection of indulgences (including two incunables) presumably used by Henry Charles Lea in writing his History of auricular confession and indulgences in the Latin Church. Each of the 5 printed broadsides is mounted on a paper board. One is an Italian summary of indulgences attached to blessed objects (with imprint: "Roma, & In Forlí per Gioiello Selua 1692."). Two are Spanish indulgences issued under the seal of Miguel Payá y Rico, Archbishop of Toledo (whose signature appears in facsimile), in 1889 and 1891 and printed in Madrid by "Tip. de los Huérfanos, Juan Bravo, 5"; each contains a blank space for the name of the recipient to be filled in. Two are fictitious indulgences: 1 in Italian (with imprint: "B.T.F. 1812") and 1 in Spanish (with imprint: "Madrid, 1881.--Imp. de Aguado; Pontejos, 8."). Some items in this collection have Lea's ms. notes in pencil or ink; some facsimiles are stamped in blue ink with the date "June 19 1896". Six ms. leaves of notes in Lea's hand and a green cloth board with gold-stamped red leather label ("Fac-Simile's [sic] of Indulgences") on recto and Lea's bookplate on verso are also laid in.
